The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established at the inception of the Polytechnic in November, 1979 to carry out a programme of study terminating in the award of the Nigerian National diploma (NND) certificate in Mechanical Engineering. The policy change by the Federal Government in the training structure of technicians/technologists brought about the re-introduction of traditional two-tier system of technological education comprising the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National diploma (HND) programmes. Under this arrangement, each tier lasts two academic sessions. However, after the first tier (the national diploma), the graduates are expected to undergo a period of one-year cognate industrial training before proceeding for the Higher National Diploma.

The National Diploma programme in Mechanical Engineering Technology is aimed at producing Mechanical Engineering technicians and technologists for the nation's industries, construction firms, public utilities and services. On successful completion of the programmes, the diplomats should be able:

- to carry out machine shop operations;

- to produce machine components;

- to operate, maintain and service mechanical equipment;

- to prepare systematic Engineering reports;

- to carry out plant installation and maintenance; and 

- to apply management principles in organizing supervisory groups and in the management of sequence of activities.

The Higher National Diploma programme in Mechanical Engineering Technology are aimed at producing technologists with a good mastery of engineering approach in executing Mechanical Engineering works.

 

Two options of the HND programmes available in the Department are Manufacturing Engineering Technology and Power Plant Engineering Technology. 

HND (ME) Manufacturing Engineering Technology

The programme in Manufacturing Engineering Technology is aimed at producing technologists with knowledge and skills for manufacturing and maintenance of the programme should be able to:

- use and operate various machine tools and equipment in the manufacturing of engineering components;

- understand the principles and application of manufacturing management techniques;

- design tools and jigs and produce prototypes of such items;

- fabricate metal products using various techniques and processes;

- plan and carry out installation, maintenance and repair of plant, machines and equipment; and manage material and human resources in the manufacturing industries at this level

Entry Requirement

HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) PROGRAMMES

Applicants seeking Higher National Diploma [HND] admission must possess the basic entry requirements for the National Diploma Programme.  In addition, the applicant must possess the ND in Mechanical Engineering obtained at not less than the Lower Credit level from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro or from any other Polytechnic accredited for the programme, or its recognised equivalent plus a minimum of one [1] year post qualification relevant industrial work experience. The candidate should also request his or her institution to forward his or her official academic transcript under confidential cover to the Registrar, Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro.
