What we do in the Department of Agric & Bio-Environmental

Overview

In recent years, the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro has been adjudged as the best Polytechnic in Nigeria and one of the best polytechnics in West Africa. This is a result of its contemporary innovations as well as the high-spirited graduate the institution has produced. In order to sustain this temple as the best among its peers, as well as further aggrandize and strengthen the vision of the institution, the Department of Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineering was established in the year 2015. Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineering is based on pure and applied science.  It is a discipline that applies engineering science and technology to agricultural production, processing and environment. Because of the importance of food to the existence of man, the role which the Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineer plays in any nation cannot be over-emphasized.
The research being carried out in the Department covers the following areas of Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineering: Farm Power and Machinery; Soil and Water Conservation; Post Harvest Technology; Food Processing; Biotechnology; Farm Electrification; and Farm Structure and Environment. Another emerging area in Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineering is Farm safety and Ergonomic control. The department also has it new curriculum structured in line with the provision of the National Policy on Education (NPE) and with robust credit units that allows its students to diversify and cope with other related engineering disciplines in their future career.
The department was established in September 2015 and it is the fifth Engineering Department to be established in the School of Engineering, Federal Polytechnic Ilaro. The first set of students into the Department for National Diploma programme was admitted through JAMB in the 2015/2016 session. The Department has since commenced Higher National Programme in 2021. The first set of students for the Higher National Programme was admitted in 2021/2022. The number of students enrolled in both programmes has (significantly since inception) been growing tremendously yearly. It is the expectation of the department that this number would continue to increase in years to come due to the pivotal role the department plays in nation-building.
The department is blessed with dynamic and competent academic staff, spread across the various areas of specializations. It is also equipped with state of the art equipment and facilities spread across the various areas of specializations to aid effective teaching and research. In recent years, members of staff have been undergoing various trainings, workshops and conferences so as to improve their academic and technical prowess. To this effect, the department through members of staff has conducted a number of researches that is aimed towards addressing contemporary needs of the farmers within and outside the host communities.
Our students are adequately trained to be self-dependent and creative in solving employment problems rather than be job seekers. They are well grounded in both theory and practicals aspect of the profession.

Our Objectives

Our goal is to equip our students to be adequately trained and be self-dependent and creative in solving employment problems rather than be job seekers. They are well grounded in both the theory and practical aspects of the profession.
