What we do in the Department of Banking and Finance

Overview

Welcome to the Department of Banking and Finance, Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro. The Department situates at the East Campus of the Institution. Our goal and objective to produce business management personnel for public and private enterprises who should contribute effectively and efficiently to achievement of utilizing human and material resources at any time with the organization and be employers of labour have largely been achieved. Our curriculum is structured in four semesters of classroom work and practicals. The Department has 13 (thirteen) academic staff that have the pre-requisite degrees in Business Administration either at graduate or post graduate levels. All the academic staff are registered with the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM) or/and other relevant professional bodies.

NATIONAL DIPLOMA [FULL-TIME]

The objective of the National Diploma programme in Banking and Finance is to produce manpower that can effectively perform a range of functions in the various departments of the Banking industry and in Financial Institutions. Specifically, diploma holders of the programme should be able to:\

Assist in the collection and integration of basic financial data for use in investment decisions;

Interprete and appraise final accounts of companies; and other relevant operating data in the banking industry;

Assist in the preparation of short and long term budget plans;

Collect and collate relevant financial information to aid superior officers, and management in financial decisions and

Assist in the analysis and evaluation of investment proposals, price and market trends.

Conduct search and perfect all security documents submitted by borrowing customers;

Interpret basic statistical data [Price changes, Interest and Foreign Exchange rates, etc] etc;

Calculate, interpret and apply the Net Present Value and;

Calculate internal rate of returns and other investments criteria;

Prepare proforma balance sheet, short and long term budget plans such as; cash budget, sales budget etc;

Forecast Market trends so as to determine profitability, viablility, etc;

Evaluate and manage investment portfolio;

Analyse investment proposals;

Analyse and evaluate financial assets for investment purposes;

HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) PROGRAMMES

Applicants seeking Higher National Diploma [HND] admission must possess the basic entry requirements for the National Diploma Programme.  In addition, the applicant must possess the ND in Banking and Finance obtained at not less than the Lower Credit level from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro or from any other Polytechnic accredited for the programme, or its recognised equivalent plus a minimum of one [1] year post qualification relevant industrial work experience. The candidate should also request his or her institution to forward his or her official academic transcript under confidential cover to the Registrar, Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro.
