What we do in the Department of Building Technology

Overview

The Higher National Diploma course in Building Technology is designed to prepare higher level Building Technicians/Technologists for the building industry. On completion of the program, the graduate will be able to: - prepare programs and progress charts for housing projects; - supervise and control the construction of the building from setting out to final completion; - extract and compile a schedule of materials required for construction from architects and engineer's drawings; - design and make working drawings of all types of building structures and interpret working drawings of all types of buildings; - carry out site measurements for reparation of bonus schemes for workmen and for interim and final accounts for the contractor's claims; - prepare medium size bill of quantities for lump sum contract; - compile simple estimates for minor works; analyses and price simple bills of quantities; - carry out inspection of buildings and other properties including estate roads and undertake repairs and maintenance works; and - carry out a structural survey of existing buildings and prepare the schedule of dilapidation and repairs.

Our Objectives

The objectives are to produce graduates that will assist professional experts in low-rise building production and to prepare higher-level Building Technicians/Technologists for the building industry.

Applicants seeking Higher National Diploma [HND] admission must possess the basic entry requirements for the National Diploma Programme.  In addition, the applicant must possess the ND in Building Technology obtained at not less than the Lower Credit level from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro or from any other Polytechnic accredited for the programme, or its recognised equivalent plus a minimum of one [1] year post qualification relevant industrial work experience. The candidate should also request his or her institution to forward his or her official academic transcript under confidential cover to the Registrar, Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro

NATIONAL DIPLOMA (ND) PROGRAMMES

WAEC,GCE[O/L],SSCE,NECO,NABTEB or equivalent with Credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics and any two of the following Economics/Commerce, Building Construction, Technical Drawing/Graphics Design, Civic Education, Carpentry and Joinery, Plumbing and Pipe Fitting, Painting and Decoration, Wood work, Computer Studies, Chemistry, Biology,  Geography, Further Mathematics, Religious Knowledge,  Metal Work, Upholstery, Basic Electronics, Introduction to Building Construction, Financial Accounting, Draughtsmanship/ Graphic Design, Machine WoodWorking,  Computer Craft Studies, Furniture Making, Electrical Installation & Maintenance Work, Welding and Fabrication   A pass in Technical Drawing and  or Building Construction will be an advantage.
