You are all welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering. Well, it is worth noting that following the resource inspection visitation carried out by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in June 2002, approval was granted to the Institution to commence the National Diploma programme in Civil Engineering. A substantive Head of Department was appointed in October 2002. Consequently, the first intake commenced studies in the department in the 2002/2003 academic year. The department was in its eighth year of operation when in August 2010 the department had another visitation carried out by the NBTE for Resource Inspection to run the HND programme. What we do in the Department of Civil Engineering

Overview

Welcome!!!

I want to welcome you to the pioneer department in the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro. The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1979 as the first academic Department of the institution with Dr. S. A. Makanjuola as the pioneer substantive head of Department. At inception the department opened with 33 students, 12 academic staff and 4 non-teaching staff.

From inception till date, the following people have headed the Department vis-a-viz – Dr. (Engr.) S. A. Makanjuola, Surv. A. Adeleke, Mr. J. O. Scott, Sur. A. A. Fayemi, Engr. F.A.O. Akinboboye, Engr. (Mrs.) M. O. Balogun, Engr. H. A. Sanni, Engr. O. A. Aikulola and Engr Jide Soyemi PhD (the incumbent Head).

Over 3,600 students (2,100 ND and 1500 HND) have graduated from the department.  This is in line with the major function of the department to train students in Civil Engineering discipline and impact in them the skills to move the nation forwards development.  Other functions include research in Civil Engineering and allied discipline.

The research interests domiciled in the Department cover materials (concrete, steel, timber and bamboo), water and waste water, structural design, Hydraulics and Geotechnics.

The department is blessed to have 6 former students as part of the academic staff with all of them having at least a master’s degree.  The department has also, produced one Rector, two (2) Deputy Rector, three (3) Dean of School, one (1) Dean Students Affairs, two Directors (ILPO and APP) and countless head and members of statutory and ad-hoc committees.

In addition, the Department birthed the following departments, Mechanical Engineering, Building Technology and Survey and Geo-informatics.

Also, it should be noted that enrolment into the department is driven by the economy which can be seen in the admission of fresh ND I Students. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment in order to meet up with the challenges of the modern time.

One more time, welcome to our world in the Department of Civil Engineering.
