What we do in the Department of General Studies

Overview

The various courses offered by the General Studies Department to students are to help broaden their understanding of the key areas of humanity. These include amongst others the study of Economics, English and French languages, Law, Sociology, Psychology and Social Philosophy.

General Studies courses are also targeted at developing the essential qualities students will need to achieve their personal and professional goals in life and also help to create a better Nigerian society.

Finally, General Studies courses are also designed to encourage students in the Polytechnic to gain and develop knowledge, conceptual understanding, research skills, analytical and interpretive skills, and communication skills, contributing to the development of the students in general. They also encourage students to respect and understand the world around them and to provide skills and attitude that could facilitate further studies.

Our Objectives

General Studies Programmes are developed for students ‘careers that require group understanding, learning and practicing of different methods of close reading, careful analysis of contemporary, social, cultural and political problems and the application of such knowledge in practical life as well as deepening students’ ability of critical thinking.

General Studies also helps to expand students’ knowledge of the human conditions especially in relation to positive ideas and values that enrich the human imagination, thought process, and decision making.
