What we do in the Department of Mass Communication

Overview

Brief History The Mass Communication Department of The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro took off with 43 students in October, 2016. The pioneering students graduated in October 2018 with 5 distinction students. In line with vision, which is aligned to the corporate strategy of FPI (to be the best in Nigeria within its mandate) we have adopted emphasis on practical training. As a polytechnic, we emphasize ‘mass communication technology’; hence for all our courses, practical contents are compulsory (in addition to those specified by the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE). Our goal is to ensure that our graduates are job-ready (either as employees or self-employed). To make this possible, the management ensures that all necessary equipment is available. We have electricity 24 hours and our equipment is state-of-the-art. Our mass communication studios is perhaps the best owned by any tertiary institution in Nigeria. Operations of our radio station would soon commence. Our trainees also go through the Polytechnic’s Entrepreneurial Development Centre’s training programme compulsorily, in this regard also. We hold periodic town and gown conferences and seminars to further expose our students. We recently held the first National Media Communication and Information Technology Workshop (sponsored by the Nigerian Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, Galaxy Backbone Ltd and Complete Sports Ltd. We also produced a Yoruba radio programme “OpoKerin Islam” during the Ramadan period and series of documentaries to further give our students’ practical training. Currently, we run FOUR sequences at ND Level to conform to the state of the mass communication profession at global level: Print Media Unit, Marketing Communications Unit; Communication Unit and Broadcast Unit. Staff The department has a total of 14 academic staff and one chief technician. The academic staff comprises of 5 lecturers and five technologists. Our academic staff has rich experience in teaching and mass communication practice and the institution is supporting them for higher degrees through scholarships and grants.
