What we do in the Department of Taxation

Overview

The department of Taxation was established by the academic board under the able leadership of the chairman academic board Arch. Olusegun Aluko Ph.D. A coordinator was appointed by the management in the person of Mr. J.O. Ogunbi to kick start the proposed department in March 2015. The National.Board for.Technical.Education (NBTE) Resource Inspection Team visited the department on 8th to 11th, March 2015, where approval to admit students into the department was granted with effect from the 2015/2016 academic session. A substantive Head of the Department was appointed on 3rd August 2015. Full accreditation was given to run Taxation as a course of study beginning 2018/2019 academic session.

Taxation Department, a consistently growing Department in The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, commenced Academic Programme during the 2015/2016 Academic Session with sixty-five (65) students, and admission was granted to eighty-five (85) students in 2018/2019 Academic Session. The Department offers a broad range of course specializations with a specific focus on teaching students to responsibly and intelligently understand major tax assessment laws including Personal Income Tax, Company Income Tax, Oil and Gas Tax, Specialized Taxation, Capital Gains Tax, Value Added Tax, Tertiary Education Tax, Tax Audit, and Investigation, as well as International Taxation.

Also, to support the government effort in focusing attention on Income Tax generation that provides more revenue in a diversified economy, rather than the mono-product based economy. Also providing workable solutions to identify economic problems, most importantly in the area of income generation for the country through recommendations and suggestions from research findings. Taxation, as a course of study, provides basic conceptual knowledge as a foundation for career development, as a result of this; the department organizes the annual symposium, discussion, and debate where Tax Consultants/Specialists (Resource Persons) give lectures to Taxation Students to support and enhanced their career progression.

The Department was kick-started by Dr. Akinde, M.A. (FCA, ACTI) as the pioneer Head of Department with following pioneer staff; Mr. Idowu, G.O, Mr. Sadiq, I.A., and Mr Adeyemo, M.O. He eventually gave the leadership to Mrs. Adelusi, A.I. (HND, B.Sc., M.Sc., ACA, MITD, ACTI), after he was elected as the Dean, School of Management Studies (SMS) in 2018, under their stronghold, the Department has produced over a hundred National Diploma (ND) graduates and efforts have reached a great height to mount Higher National Diploma (HND) in Taxation for the teeming Applicants.

The only challenge faced by the department was the non-availability of space, which was promptly addressed by the management during the last accreditation exercise. The management comfortably provided a building for the department which allows the department to have a reference room for the use of staff and the students. The reference room serves two purposes in the form of a mini library and taxation laboratory.

The department will be appreciative of the management if he can provide a photocopying machine which will assist in the service delivery of the department. Happy 39th convocation celebration and 40th anniversary

Thank you and God bless The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro

Adelusi, A. I. (Mrs)
