What we do in the Department of Urban & Regional Planning

Overview

The Federal Polytechnic Ilaro was conceived as part of the effort to produce a category of man power requirement presently in short supply. This is middle level manpower in Town Planning Profession who are capable of assisting professional Town Planners in their duties. The department started as an off-shoot of Physical Planning Unit of the Polytechnic. The Physical Unit had two qualified Town Planners as Member of Staff, one Architect and another Registered Town Planner in Building Technology and Civil Engineering Departments respectively were transferred to the Town Planning Department. These four lecturers form the core staff members. With the existence of other departments like Building Technology, Civil Engineering, and General Studies, it was not difficult to get service lecturers for other courses to be taken in Town and Regional Planning Department. The existing policy with sharing common physical facilities on the campus e.g. workshops, Laboratories Lecture Rooms Drawing Studio also facilitate the establishment of the department as new physical structure were not needed. The library purchased additional books from the list submitted by the department. The First Set of 36 students were admitted for the 1991/1992 session through JAMB. the Second set of 38 student were admitted for the 1992/1993 session, the Third set of 47 students were admitted for the 1993/1994 session, while 60 and 97 students were admitted in 1994/1995 and 1995/1996 sessions respectively. Up to-date the department has been admitting students through JAMB for National Diploma Programme. The Higher National Diploma Programme Commenced with 21 students in the 1994/1995 session and the second set of 48 students were admitted for the 1995/1996 session. The studio project of the student were focused on the local environment. All the current 200 level National Diploma student had their 4 - month Industrial Attachment training at the end of first session, and all the current HND student had their one year post National Diploma Industrial Attachment before they were admitted into the programme. Through the approval of NBTE, the name of the department was changed from Town and Regional Planning (TRP) to Urban and Regional Planning (URP) in 2011 Member of staff have also been undergoing various programmes - Workshops, Conferences, etc. to improve their skills.

Our Objectives

The aim is to understand the nature and purpose of physical planning at national, regional, state and local levels, understand the role physical planning in eco-development; understand the general, social, economic and political basis of physical planning Nigeria, identity and analyze physical planning problems and proffer solutions to them  and prepare technical reports of various types and on planning issues.

Applicants seeking Higher National Diploma [HND] admission must possess the basic entry requirements for the National Diploma Programme.  In addition, the applicant must possess the ND in Urban and Regional Planning obtained at not less than the Lower Credit level from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro or from any other Polytechnic accredited for the programme, or its recognised equivalent plus a minimum of one [1] year post qualification relevant industrial work experience. The candidate should also request his or her institution to forward his or her official
