The department was established by the Academic Board in September 2007. A coordinator, Mr Oloruntoba was appointed by the management to midwife the proposed department. The National Board of Technical Education (NBTE) Resource Team visited the department in November 2007, and approval to admit students into the department was granted with effect from October 2007. Mr Oloruntoba was appointed the substantive head of department in January 2008. The first batch of students was admitted in the 2008/2009 academic session. In October 2009, the National Board for Technical Education granted the department full accreditation for the National Diploma (ND) Computer Science programme.
By October 2010, interim accreditation for the HND programme in Computer Science was also granted with one stream of 30 students. This was increased to 2 streams by November of the same year.
In 2016, full accreditation of HND programme and reaccreditation of ND programme was granted by the same body. Currently, the department has 3 streams of ND students and 2 streams of students for the HND programme.
The department comprises 14 academic staff, 2 technical staff and 2 non-teaching staff. The 2 technical staff are responsible for managing the laboratories.
Landmark contributions of the department is the e-examination software with which the institution conducts her internal examinations.
