What we do in the Department of Accountancy

Overview

The Federal Polytechnic was established on July 1979. It opened for operation with students at the Temporary Site, Anglican Grammar School, Ilaro. In the School of Management, Two (2) departments were created in 1979. The first one was Department of Business Administration headed with Mr. Olusegun Odunsi as the Pioneer Head of Department, the second Department was Secretarial Administration and the Coordinator was Mr. B. O. Ogunyinka of blessed memory. In 2008, under the leadership of Dr. R. A. Oloyo, the Department of Secretarial Administration was moved from the School of Management Studies to the School of Pure and Applied Sciences. Similarly, in 2017, Arch O. O. Aluko Ph.D created a new School, the School of Communication and Information Technology; consequently, Office Technology Management (OTM) was moved from Pure and Applied Sciences to the new School. The First Director of the then School of Business Studies now School of Management Studies (SMS) from 1979 to 1982 was Mr. Olusegun Odunsi. The former Secretarial Studies now Office Technology Management (OTM) started as the second Department under the Business Administration Department at the former School of Business Studies (now School of Management Studies).

The goal is to produce technical manpower who can effectively perform a range of functions in the field of accountancy, insurance, banking and in financial institutions and departments.

The goal of the National Diploma in Accountancy programme is to produce technical manpower who can effectively perform a range of functions in the field of accountancy, insurance, banking and in financial institutions and departments. Graduates of the programme should be able to:

 

 

 

 

- assist in collection and integration of basic financial data for use in investment decisions;

- prepare final accounts of companies;

- assist in the preparation of short and long term budget plans;

- collect and collate relevant financial information to aid superior officers and management in making financial decisions;

- interpret some basic ratio, statistical and financial data; and

- carry out preliminary survey and feasibility studies.

This should place the graduates of the programme in the middle management positions in industry, commerce and government. The graduates should be able to:

- prepare final accounts of all kinds of business organisations including group accounts/consolidated accounts;

- set and assist in setting and operating an accounting system of any business in the economy;

- analyse and interpret financial statements;

- advise clients on investment in and out of the stock exchange;

- prepare the drafts of audit programmes;

- lead a stock-taking team for audit purposes;

- prepare budgets, fix and appraise standard costs, analyse variances for control purposes;

- provide information for price fixing and marketing strategies;

- collect, collate and analyse data for feasibility reports/project appraisal;

- carry out aspects of special investigations on how company financial resources have been utilized;

- advise on and carry out the registration/formation of new companies;

- employ moderate methods and equipment in carrying out simple managerial functions; and

- interpret basic statistical data

HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) PROGRAMMES

Applicants seeking Higher National Diploma [HND] admission must possess the basic entry requirements for the National Diploma Programme.  In addition, the applicant must possess the ND in Accountancy obtained at not less than the Lower Credit level from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro or from any other Polytechnic accredited for the programme, or its recognised equivalent plus a minimum of one [1] year post qualification relevant industrial work experience. The candidate should also request his or her institution to forward his or her official academic transcript under confidential cover to the Registrar, Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro.

NATIONAL DIPLOMA (ND) PROGRAMMES
