he Department of Food Technology is one of the first generation departments of the Polytechnic which came on board with the inception of the Polytechnic in 1979. The Department was established during the 1981/82 academic session with only the ND programme and the HND was added in 1984/85 session but due to lack of accreditation was discontinued in 1987. However, the accreditation status was reinstated during the 2003/04 session. Then we had just the Departments of Food Technology and Science Laboratory Technology making up the School of Applied Science now known as the School of Pure and Pure and Applied Sciences. The school has about six departments today

What we do in the Department of Food Technology

Overview

Our Objectives

 The aim of the program, the holders are to enable Food Technology should be able to carry out biological and chemical analysis of raw and processed for; supervise and carry out all types of industrial food processing packaging, store agricultural products for industrial use; and carry out an assessment of raw materials and processed foods.

The National Diploma in Food Technology is designed to produce food preservation and processing technicians capable of complementing the work of food scientists and engineers in the preservation and processing of food commodities in the field and in the industry. On completion of the programme the graduates should be able to:

- assists in the chemical and biological analysis of raw and processed food;

- store agricultural produce for industrial use;

- assist in all types of processed and preserved food as well as food processing and preservation chemicals and equipment.

WAEC,GCE[O/L],SSCE,NECO,NABTEB or equivalent with Credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science/Health Science and any one of the following:  Physics, Technical Drawing, Economics/Commerce, Additional/ Further Mathematics, Home Economics, Food and Nutrition, Geography, Health Education, Civic Education, Tourism, Tie & Dye, Home Management, Book Keeping/Principle Of Accounting, Data Processing, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Government, Basic Catering and Food Services, Hotel & Catering Craft Service,  plus at least a Pass in Physics and Relevant NTC/NBC &NVC Trades.

HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) PROGRAMMES

Applicants seeking Higher National Diploma [HND] admission must possess the basic entry requirements for the National Diploma Programme.  In addition, the applicant must possess the ND in Food Technology obtained at not less than the Lower Credit level from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro or from any other Polytechnic accredited for the programme, or its recognised equivalent plus a minimum of one [1] year post qualification relevant industrial work experience. The candidate should also request his or her institution to forward his or her official academic transcript under confidential cover to the Registrar, Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro.
