FPI/FUTI 23rd Convocation Exhibition: Rector Akinde Showcases Innovations, Targets Industry Collaboration

The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing research, innovation, and sustainable development with the unveiling of cutting-edge projects, as well as calling on entrepreneurs for collaboration on the mass production of its patented inventions.

The institution’s Innovation and Project Exhibition, which was part of the activities lined up for the 23rd Convocation and Fellowship Award Ceremony, held on Monday, the 13th day of April, 2026, showcased a wide range of practical solutions designed to address real-world challenges.

In his address, the Rector and Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr Mukail Aremu Akinde, FCTI, ACS described the exhibition as a celebration of creativity, ingenuity, and forward-thinking. He emphasized the institution’s commitment to supporting innovations that contribute to national development.

‘We are proud to showcase projects that respond to pressing societal challenges while promoting growth, collaboration, and sustainable development,’ he said.

Dr. Akinde noted that the innovations on display—ranging from advanced technological prototypes to community-focused solutions—underscore the institution’s dedication to excellence and relevance.

‘We’re bridging the skilled workforce gap between academia and neighboring industries,’ he said.

As part of the convocation programme, the Rector stated that the institution will confer Fellowship Awards on distinguished Nigerians, including the Executive Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, Governor of Katsina State, His Excellency, Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda, Ph.D, CON, His Royal Majesty, Oba Michael Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, Alake of Egbaland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, Olubadan of Ibadanland and an alumnus of the institution, Sotayo Olugbenga Sonuga, ACIB (UK), CEO Haven Homes in recognition of their contributions to national development.

The convocation lecture, themed “Digital Literacy: Fundamental Skills and Job Creation Tools for Graduands in the 21st Century,” he said, will be delivered by the Governor of Katsina State, His Excellency, Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda, aligning with the institution’s focus on innovation and skills development.

Dr. Akinde identified fabrication technology as a core strength of the institution, revealing that several award-winning machines developed by students are ready for commercialization while thanking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for the extension of the student loan scheme to the institution, which serves as a major intervention to improve access to tertiary education by easing the financial burden on students.”

He disclosed that arrangements have been concluded to produce an initial batch of ten (10) units for institutional use, aimed at demonstrating its efficiency and market potential.

He added that many of the machines on display are awaiting partnerships with entrepreneurs and investors for mass production.

Also speaking, the Director of Research and Development /Chairman of the Exhibition Committee, Engr. Dr. S. A. Odunlami, described the exhibition as a strategic platform for promoting innovation and the practical application of knowledge.

“This exhibition stands as a testament to the transformative power of research and innovation in addressing real-world challenges. The projects showcased here reflect not only technical competence but also the vision, dedication, and collaborative spirit of our participants.

“From groundbreaking prototypes to practical solutions with immediate societal impact, each exhibit demonstrates the vital role of innovation in driving sustainable development and economic growth,” Dr. Engr. Odunlami said.

He emphasized that in a rapidly evolving global environment, building a strong culture of research and innovation is essential for competitiveness and national progress.

Earlier, the Rector had highlighted the institution’s patented Biometric Capture Machine, currently used for attendance and examination processes, noting that it is ready for wider public adoption.

He also pointed to the Departments of Cement Engineering Technology and Chemical Engineering as key initiatives aimed at producing industry-ready manpower for Nigeria’s industrial sector.

Dr. Akinde disclosed that with a strong focus on research, fabrication, and practical innovation, the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, is positioning itself as a leading hub for technological development and industry collaboration in Nigeria, while steadily advancing its transition seamlessly to university status—the Federal University of Technology, FUTI.
