BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT THE DIRECTORATE OF WORKS AND SERVICES

Works and Services department was established in the year 1980 from the inception of the Polytechnic to see to the provision and maintenance of various infrastructural development which would improve life within the campus. They handle the maintenance of physical facilities which include Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Telecommunication on campus. The department is mainly non-teaching engineering sector with relevant engineers, builders and technical staff. The department is headed by the Director of Works who relate directly to the Rector on issues relating to the operations and maintenance of facilities on the campus.

The Director of Works also co-ordinate the activities of all the technical units. These activities are linked with the physical planning who supervise all new construction works and handover them to the Directorate for proper maintenance.

UNIT UNDER THE DIRECTORATE

Directorate operates through six units in order to carry out its departmental mandate. The six units are listed below:

  1. Civil Maintenance Unit.
  2. Electrical Maintenance Unit.
  3. Mechanical/Transport Maintenance Unit.
  4. Environmental Health Management Unit.
  5. Landscaping Park/Garden Unit.
  6. Facilities Maintenance Management Unit.

MAIN FUNCTION

In carrying out its mandate, the Directorate operate through six units, Civil Maintenance Unit, Electrical Maintenance Unit, Mechanical/Transport Maintenance Unit, Environmental Health Management Unit, Landscaping Park/Garden Unit and Facilities Maintenance Management Unit.

  1. Civil Maintenance Unit: They are responsible for all maintenance of buildings includes carpentry, plumbing, masonry sign writing/painting and repairs. They also supervise the ongoing project in the institution including roads and drainages, also they design and prepare the bill of engineering measurement and evaluation.
  2. Electrical Maintenance Unit: They are responsible for maintenance of electrical system, maintenance of low voltage and high voltage equipment and panel. They are also in charge of electrical installation, power supply, and liaises with the public electricity company (IBEDC) to ensure the provision of electricity on campus.
  3. Mechanical/Transport Maintenance Unit: They carry out maintenance and repair of automobile vehicle, plants and generators. They also handle repair and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning, and welding and fabrication including transport administration and water works maintenance.
  4. Environmental Health Management Unit: They are in charge of monitoring and controlling pollution (air, water, soil), managing waste disposal and sanitation preventing disease outbreaks, promoting healthy living condition and fumigating all the institution as at when due.
  5. Landscaping Park/Garden Unit: They are into: 

             Facilities Maintenance Management Unit: They are responsible for the planning, organization, coordination, and execution of maintenance activities that ensure optimal functioning, safety, and reliability of buildings, equipment, and grounds.

HOW TO LODGE COMPLAINTS

The complaint can be lodge through the Director of Works to the unit concerned under the lines of authority including filling job, requisition form.
