What we do in the Department of Library and Information Science

Overview

You are warmly welcome to the most sought-after Polytechnic in the country and highly resourceful department in the library and information world. Our past students had their SIWES in great institutions in Ogun State including the Print and Non – Print Media Houses like Ogun State Broadcasting Station (OGBC) and Ogun State Television (OGTV). Our students left their marks in Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta and at Simeon Adebo Library among others.

BRIEF HISTORY OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE

The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro was established by Decree 33 of 1979 and Reviewed in 1993 to provide the middle-level manpower for various industrious and fields of endeavours. By the 2015/2016 Session, the Department of Library and Information Science was established as a department in the School of Communication and Information Technology along with Department of Office and Information Technology Management (OTM) and Mass Communication. It is hoped that Department of Music will join the stream of other departments in the School of Communication and Information Technology very soon. The first set of 31 (thirty – one) students were admitted and graduated in 2017. The department has graduated two sets of ND (National Diploma) students who have found their places in industries, libraries and information centres. The second set of students graduated July, 2018. The National Diploma of the Department has been fully accredited by the national Board of Technical Education (NBTE). The proposal to implement the Higher National Diploma is in the offing and believing that it will start by the 2019/2020 Session with the Introduction of Publishing and Archival Studies to change the nomenclature of the department to Department of Library Archival and Information Studies to boost the programme and students horizon.

Our Objectives

Library and Information Science aims at producing Library Officers for the nation's libraries and information centers who will be capable of performing middle-level manpower functions in libraries. Take charge of a school or community library efficiently and effectively. Utilise Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in information handling and processing.
