Agriculture Technology
Overview
The Agricultural Technology Department of The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro took off in October, 2018. It consistutes one of the eight Departments currently run by the School of Pure and Applied Sciences (SPAS) and offers sound and accredited programme leading to the award of the degree National Diploma. The pioneering students graduated in October 2020 with five distinction students. In line with her vision, which aligned to the corporate strategy of FPI (to be the best in Nigeria within its mandate) we have adopted emphasis on practical training. As a Polytechnic, we emphasize ‘Agricultural Technology’; hence for all our courses, practical contents are compulsory (in addition to those specified by the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE). The Department horses programmes through classroom instructions, laboratory practical, field demonstration and workshop practices..
Our Objectives
The goal is to provide trained graduates, human capital, skills and technology required for sustainable development of agriculture, including animal husbandry, crop production, fisheries, forestry, and other allied disciplied by integrating education, research and industies.
The Polytechnic focuses its strategy on synergizing multi-disciplinary education and strengthening problem-specific research relevant to the country and help building innovative research environment for sustainable management of natural resources, sustainable agricultural production and overall improvement of rural livelihoods.
To achieve the Goal and objectives, the Department adopts the following mission:
1. To produce graduates that will harness the synergy between the academia and industry.
2. To provide quality education in Agricultural Courses and other allied disciplines.
3. Undertake basic, applied and adaptive research to address current and future challenges of farming community and to provide management options relevant to the prevailing agro-climate and socio economics situations.
4. To generate appropriate technologies to support sustainable growth of agricultural entrepreneurship and agri-business.
5. Develop innovative extension strategies and formulate effective mechanisms for transfer of Technology to institutions and farmers for enhanced and sustainable agricultural production leading to improved rural livelihoods and poverty alleviation.
6. To contribute to the production of raw materials/resources to support the growth of several industries locally and internationally.
